Miles per year in a rental: how to estimate them without surprises
Mileage affects the monthly fee and end-of-contract costs: here is a simple method to state it correctly.
With long-term rental you choose an annual mileage. If you underestimate it, you pay for the excess miles at the end of the contract; if you overestimate it, you pay a higher monthly fee than necessary for months. Estimating it well is one of the simplest ways to save.
The four-step method
1. Look at the past: check the mileage in the service book or on the odometer and divide by the years of use.
2. Consider the future: new job, moving house, children to drive around, frequent trips.
3. Add a margin: 10% is a good rule.
4. Round up to the next band: 10,000, 15,000, 20,000, 25,000, 30,000 km and over.
Typical examples
- City and weekend use: often 10,000-15,000 km per year.
- Commuter with 30-40 km a day: 15,000-20,000 km.
- Professional or field sales agent: 25,000-40,000 km.
- Deliveries and transport: even over 40,000 km.
What happens if something changes
Many contracts allow the mileage to be revised during the rental, recalculating the monthly fee. Terms vary: ask before signing.
Mileage and duration together
The total mileage of the contract counts: 20,000 km a year for 48 months is 80,000 km. Bear this in mind if you think you may change the duration.
In the RentalZone configurator you can change mileage and duration and immediately see how the estimated monthly fee changes.
